Video Overview

Diverticulosis or diverticular disease are out-pouchings of the colon. They occur as you get older and mostly associated with the high fat diet, a Western diet and obesity. Diverticular disease can lead to one of two things in a small percentage of patients. Diverticula can bleed. It can cause massive bleeding which would require urgent colonoscopic intervention or even surgery. Diverticula can actually perforate and this would also be potentially a life threatening emergency. This will require antibiotics, hospitalization and even potentially a surgery. The best way to avoid any of these problems is to adhere to a high fiber diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, get plenty of exercise and drink plenty of water.
