Colitis is inflammtion of the colon that can be due to many different causes. IBS is not an inflamatory condition. It is important to determine diagnosis as the treatments are different.

IBS is irritable bowel syndrome - this is a diagnosis that can be made based on clinical symptoms - normally people have alternating periods of constipation with diarrhea. Abdominal pain shouldn't be ignored; however, and should be evaluated by a specialist to rule out more serious causes of the pain (such as ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, etc).
