What is the best way to prep for a colonoscopy?

This question was asked in Irvine, California on 12/16/2011.
Will the doctor give me colon prep products or will this be something I should do on my own? What foods should I avoid?

There are several different ways to prep for a colonoscopy; however, the most used is a formulation of laxative that comes in a gallon-sized container as a powder. This powder is re-hydrated with water or a clear sugar-free drink (like Crystal Light) and drank over a 3 hour time period. This medication will be prescribed to you by the provider performing the exam. I wouldn't recommend attempting a bowel prep without first discussing it with your specialist.
