What are the best preventative measures for reducing colon or bowel problems?

This question was asked in Irvine, California on 12/16/2011.
What preventative health measures can I take to help reduce the likelihood of colon cancer or other gastroenterological condition? Should I adjust my diet or take vitamins and other supplements? Or will simply getting all the screening tests be the best preventative measure?

Great question! The risk of developing colon cancer or colon polyps is known to be increased by eating diets high in fat and red meats. Also the risk is increased in people who smoke tobacco. These are fairly simple lifestyle changes that can improve your risk profile; however, even with lower risk, I would still recommend getting screening tests done as these lifestyle changes dont eliminate your chances.
