Should I get sedation while getting my colonoscopy?

This question was asked in Irvine, California on 06/11/2012.
Is it necessary to get sedation for my colonoscopy? Are there advantages one way or another? I have heard that it can actually be better for the physicians if you are not sedated. Is this true?

Sedation is not necessary but most patients prefer it.

Sedation during colonoscopy is used to ensure that the patient is comfortable during the procedure. The patient is not asleep so that they can respond to the physician if needed.
