Is it necessary to get sedation or anesthesia when getting a colonoscopy?

What is the norm when it comes to sedation for colonoscopies? Do most patients go under and receive anesthesia? What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing so?

Having sedation during a colonoscopy ensures that you will be comfortable. The procedure is very personal in nature and many people prefer to be "sleepy" through it.
