How far does a colonoscopy examine?

This question was asked in Manhattan, New York on 05/24/2012.
How far back does the colonoscope actually go? Do they go all the way into the abdomen? How many feet back does it actually go in? If it goes farther does it hurt more?

An ideal colonoscopy procedure will examine the rectum, descending colon, transverse colon and ascending colon, including the junction where the small and large intestine join. The successful completion of a full colonscopy can be effected by the person's unique anatomy of the bowel.

the colon is 5 feet long and the scope will traverse the whole colon. It is not painful.
