Does getting a colonoscopy hurt?

This question was asked in Irvine, California on 06/06/2012.
My husband is 53 and I believe he is supposed to get a colonoscopy. Colon cancer runs in our family. He has never had a colonoscopy before. He is reluctant to get a colonoscopy because he thinks that it will be painful. Is this true? Do colonoscopies hurt? Is there an alternative if he cannot be convinced?

Colonoscopy is not painfull and is well tolerated by most people. A little discomfort can happen and passes quickly after the procedure is done.

Colonoscopies do not commonly hurt in anyway. There is sedation that can be given that will help relax you so that the procedure is not remembered.
